Ready to stitch up the cutest dress in your closet? Join us for the Florence Shirt / Shirtdress Class and learn how to create this stylish, flattering garment with guidance every step of the way. Whether you’re looking to grow your garment sewing skills or finally tackle a garment that’s both comfortable and wearable, this class is a great fit!

You’ll leave with new techniques, more sewing confidence, and a handmade shirt or shirtdress you’ll be excited to show off. Grab your spot before this class buttons up!


(You'll make a Florence shirt or shirtdress for
 yourself or someone else – 28 sizes included in pattern for girls and women, bust range 21”-51” (age 2 to women’s 2XL).)

Learn to:

  • Lay out pattern pieces & cut from fabric yardage
  • Stitch a (symmetrical) band color
  • Make a box pleat
  • Attach patch pockets
  • Topstitch neatly
  • Turn an even hem on any shape edge
  • Sew buttonholes on your machine

Prerequisites:

- Must know how to use your own sewing machine and how to choose pattern size.

- Take Confident Stitching class and/or Garment Sewing Basics class if needed.

 

BEFORE class Homework:

Pre-wash & dry fabric yardage

Iron washed yardage

Trace copy of pattern size you plan to use if you don’t want to cut original paper copy. We recommend Pattern Ease.

 

Supply List to bring to class:

Sewing machine with power cord & accessories (including manual)

Pinking shears or serger

Pre-washed and pressed fabric (see above homework)

Matching threads

Paper pattern

Fabric scissors

Pins

Regular pencil

Seam Ripper

Chalk pencil in a color that shows on your fabric

Tape measure

Buttons or $5 cash if you want to purchase from instructor’s stash

Bring lunch for break (30 minutes) or grab something from a restaurant in our plaza. Refrigerator available.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Confident Beginner. You should already be familiar with how to use your sewing machine. You should also either have some garment making experience OR have taken our Garment Sewing Basics class.
Instructor: Brooke Wilkerson
Instructor Bio: Brooke Wilkerson has been sewing since the age of seven. She is a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University with a B.A. in Theatre, where she spent hundreds of hours in the costume shop. Her professional experience as a freelance seamstress includes working for The Dallas Theater Center, Barney & Friends/Hit Entertainment, Irene Corey Design Associates (ICDA), The Dallas Opera, and a number of production companies in the film & television industry. Other sewing credits include constructing Texas Rose Festival gowns and various items of home décor. When she is not sewing, Brooke has enjoyed working as wardrobe crew for Dallas area TV shows like “Prison Break”, “The Good Guys”, and “Chase”. These days she works as one of the Longarm operators at NYMQS. She also likes to spend time with her husband and Jack Russell terrier.
