Confident Stitching -- Intro To Sewing

Download class information here.
If you want to learn sewing basics in one short session, this class is for you! This is a hands-on intensive crash course to learn to use your sewing machine. You will learn the parts of the sewing machine, how to set up and thread your sewing machine, wind a bobbin, and stitch a pin cushion in a single session. Perfect for anyone who has never even sat in front of a machine or if it's been a minute since you last sewed. Whether your machine is still in the box or has sat lonely and alone for years, you'll be stitching confidently by the end of class. (Age 16 and up only.)
During this session, we will cover the following:
-
The anatomy of a sewing machine
-
How to plug in and turn on your sewing machine
-
How to thread your machine
-
How to fill (wind) a bobbin
-
How to properly seat a bobbin
-
Common thread issues and how to fix them
-
Needle and thread types and purposes
-
How to measure accurate seam allowances
-
How and when to pivot a seam
You’ll have plenty of time to get friendly with your machine and practice stitching so you can take that quilting class you’ve been longing to sign up for. Class instruction includes visual aids, handouts, and loads of hands-on help.
What to Bring to Class:
-
Sewing machine and all its parts (power cable, foot pedal, and all accessories that came with it, including presser feet and bobbins).
- Two empty bobbins, type specified in your machine manual.
-
Sewing machine manual (search online for a downloadable copy if you don’t have one.) At a minimum, bring printed pages of the instructions for filling a bobbin and for threading your sewing machine.
-
A new spool of “All Purpose” polyester sewing machine thread or 100% cotton quilting thread.
-
Sewing kit (at a minimum: sharp scissors, hem gauge or small narrow grid ruler, pins, and a seam ripper)
-
Scrap fabric for practice (must be woven and non-stretchy like quilting cotton or muslin or an old pillowcase)
*NOTE: If your machine is older than 10 or so years, you may need to schedule a private lesson. Please call the store to verify if your machine can be covered in this class. No vintage machines in this group class.
