Basic T-shirt Class

Learn to sew your own simple cap sleeve knit t-shirts using a sewing machine and/or a serger!

In this class, you’ll learn how to cut your fabric, fit to your custom size, and sew a garment made from knit fabric. You’ll leave with a new custom t-shirt and a pattern you can use again and again!

Supplies:

  • Sewing machine with instruction manual
  • Serger (optional but recommended if you are familiar with using one). We offer Serger Classes too!
  • “The Tee” pattern by Cake Patterns (please print pattern at 100% or NO SCALING. Tape your copy together BEFORE class if you are using the paged pdf version) Please click here for the pattern
  • Universal and ballpoint needles for your machines (size 80/12 is usually good)
  • Double needle for your sewing machine (available at Not Your Mama’s Quilt Store)
  • Stretch knit fabric in appropriate yardage for your size according to pattern (95% cotton 5% spandex recommended) Allow for 2-4 inches of shrinkage. PRE-WASH & heat dry yardage to preshrink before class!
  • Coordinating thread for all your machines
  • Your measurements written down – bust, waist, hips, preferred t-shirt length
  • A favorite t-shirt from your closet for fit and neckline reference
  • Fabric scissors
  • Rotary cutter and mat (optional if you prefer not to cut with scissors)
  • Straight pins
  • Safety pins
  • Regular pencil
  • Ruler (18” grid ruler recommended)
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric chalk or marker
  • Pen and paper for taking notes
