Batik Scrappy Jacket

Not sure what to do with a jelly roll that you like to pet?  We have the answer that will keep you loving it... a jacket!!  This jacket uses a sweatshirt as the base and all your favorite 2.5" strips for a stunning new look.

**Please have all supplies ready so class can start promptly**

Supplies

  • 2 men's sweatshirts- two sizes larger than you would normally wear.  (sewing the fabric strips onto the shirts makes the fabric of the shirts draw up quite a bit.  One size larger works too!)
  • 2 Jelly roll of fabric strips..fabric scraps cut into 2-1/2" strips... (nothing smaller than an inch and a half.)
  • Threads. Usually embroidery threads. I use a variety of colors to coordinate, or contrast with the strips so plan a little!
  • Your sewing machine (in working order). KNOW YOUR MACHINE... (if your machine is new to you, or you haven't used your travel machine in awhile, please review usage, before you come to your class)
  • Spare machine needles
  • Cords
  • Foot pedal
  • Spare bobbins (plan ahead....if your shirts are black choose black bobbins, if it is another color, try to match.)
  • Straight pins/ cushion
  • Spray adhesive (505)
  • Cutting mat/ rotary cutter and ruler at least 24"

HOMEWORK (please complete before class):

There are a number of ways to create a fabric from your strips.  You can make log cabins, or sew the strips together to your liking.  Goal: you will be sewing your strips to create a fabric, 45" wide x 2.5 yds long.

One way to do it (similar to Jelly Roll Race quilt):
1) Sew your strips end-for-end using the bias technique (sew strips on diagonal like you're making binding).
2) Fold your very loooong strip in half and sew across the length, stopping a few inches before the end to cut your strip. Continue to sew until the end.
3) Repeat step 2 until your piece measures 45" w x 2.5 yds long.
4) Play with the decorative stitches on your machine (optional) or zig-zag your way down your seams- every 2/3 seams on your "yardage", play with thread color and stitch size.  :)
